The
Student World Assembly Chapter at McGill
University was established in the early days of the 2004 academic
year by two SWA members, Rahul Vanjani and Alireza Hajihosseini.
After attending the 2004 International Convention in San Luis Obispo,
Rahul and Alireza then established a chapter at McGill when they
returned to Montreál. The two coordinated an informal SWA
kick-off event
immediately after students returned to school from the summer
recess.
After completing the required application forms for establishing
a club on campus and obtaining "interim" club status,
the Rahul and Alireza organized another event with the help of a
newly formed SWA-McGill Executive Team. The
event, held on October 22nd, brought together more than forty
interested students and introduced the Student World Assembly to
a broader audience at McGill.
It
didn't take long for the Student World Assembly Chapter at McGill
to attract members and supporters on campus. Having formed a dynamic
leadership team, the chapter started organizing its first regional
event which was held on January 27th 2005. The event, which
was in the form of a panel discussion dealing with the Pressing
Global Issue of Nuclear Proliferation in the Middle East, brought
together an impressive group of notable scholars from all across
Canada and the United States
Student
participants were also able to engage with the panelists in an
open Q&A Session moderated by the panel's Chair, Dr.
Farhang Rajaee (Carleton
University). Following the event, a dinner reception was held
for invited guests and SWA members. Notable guests at the event
included Ambassador
Kimon Valaskakis, Prof.
Hasan-Yari, Prof.
James Devine, Prof. Prof.
Arang Keshavarzian, and Prof.
M. Reza Fakhari, along with members from the SWA Chapter at
Ottawa University. Mr. Paul
Raynault, founder of SWA, addressed the guests at the dinner
reception and thanked them for their participation and support.
The
SWA McGill Chapter applied for the 2005 Convention spot in the
first couple of months of its establishment. Early on it demonstrated
an active spirit and a dynamic approach to the issues central
to the SWA. After reviewing the application thoroughly, the Convention
and Events Planning Committee voted in favor of the McGill application.
We look forward to hearing more good news from our members at
McGill and wish them success in their preparations for what will
undoubtedly be an exceptional SWA Convention. Than you!
