While many authors focus on successful development as a model for effective government practices, few delve into answering the questions about failure. Jared Diamond focuses on a discussion of failed societies and collapsed civilizations. Using historical and present day examples, Diamond points out the consequences of squandering resources, ignoring and exploiting the environment, and the use of unstable economic practices. From these examples emerges a true concern for the future and in response Diamond suggests ways in which to counter the looming catastrophe.
