Recounting his experiences growing up in Sierra Leone in the 1990’s, Ishmael Beah describes his transition from a precocious 12 year old to a murderous child soldier. Recruited by the national army after his entire family is murdered, he quickly becomes addicted to both drugs and killing. The novel gives a vivid and horrifyingly real description of a growing part of human trafficking that affects children all over the world.
