Student World Assembly
International Convention on HIV/AIDS
Montréal ‘06

Resolutions Approved at the March 9-12, 2006 International Convention

I. Drug Accessibility
The SWA notes the lack of HIV/AIDS drugs available in less developed countries.

The SWA recommends that a permanent committee be created to focus on ongoing efforts for battling the issue of HIV/AIDS.

The SWA declares accordingly a committee that will abide by the following guidelines:

  • This committee will be dedicated towards coordinating HIV/AIDS efforts and ensure that all provisions in this resolution are implemented.
  • 7 officers will be elected to set up meetings on specific dates and times to be held online in the discussion forum.
  • The 7 officers will consist of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Officers, Alternate, and Alternate at Large.
  • The primary governing body responsible for passing all final resolutions will be the seven-person officer forum.
  • General membership will be open to all Student World Assembly members that are interested to openly participate in discussions. The purpose of the general members will be to provide the seven-person core forum with thoughts and various ideas.

The SWA supports the necessity of HIV/AIDS drug cocktails for over one complete year to those students infected in parts of the world that cannot afford these drugs.

The SWA further recommends that the SWA will lobby companies, starting with Pharmaceuticals companies, through a letter-writing campaign to key stakeholders, to donate free medication to communities in greatest need that have clinics that can administer the medication. This campaign will be approved by the HIV/AIDS committee to put pressure on these large corporations to sponsor 100 + students in multiple areas in less developed countries.

  • The SWA reaffirms that with help of the HIV/AIDS committee, fundraising efforts will be geared towards raising funds to market the pharmaceutical companies that sponsor the HIV/AIDS victims.

  • The SWA further requests that these companies provide free drug cocktails for at least one complete year.
  • The SWA endorses marketing efforts that include press releases and recognition on the Student World Assembly website.

The SWA declares accordingly that SWA form partnerships with other relevant organizations and companies.

II. HIV/AIDS Education

The SWA endorses programs in educational institutions created to promote
sex-education, while remaining culturally sensitive.

The SWA recommends that HIV/AIDS awareness be incorporated into the curriculum, through ones educational institution, parental guidance, and initiatives of community leaders.

The SWA takes note of the fact that HIV/AIDS is not contracted solely through sexual relations, but also intravenous drug use, blood transfusions, and mother-to-child contraction.

The SWA further recommends establishing support systems consisting of peer groups, especially emphasizing youth-to-youth programs.

The SWA further proclaims that HIV/AIDS education, prevention and awareness is most effective when started at a young age.

The SWA urges facilitated/free and confidential testing, and post-testing counseling.

The SWA calls upon the creation of a SWA Fund to sponsor the aforementioned educational initiatives. The fund will attempt to obtain sponsorship and member donations.

The SWA encourages an HIV/AIDS educational program that targets youth outreach.

The SWA strives to build coalitions with other organizations that specifically target the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
