SWA
Chapter established at Adelphi University
Adelphi
University, located in Garden City, NY, launched a new
chapter of the Student World Assembly in May 2004. The
founder of SWA, Mr. Paul Reynault,
|
|
visited Adelphi University on May 10, 2004 and in conference
with Shahram Hashemi (Co-Executive Director of the SWA), the
dean of the Honor’s College, Richard Garner, the Chapter
Advisor, Professor Nicholas Rizopoulos, and a core group of
five honor’s college students, reviewed the aims of
the SWA at Adelphi, approving and establishing the chapter.
The following week elections for officers were held where
the administrative positions of the organization were appointed
and the charter structure was established.
The Adelphi University Chapter of the SWA is committed to
fostering a greater understanding of international issues
and global democracy. In promoting a greater awareness of
current issues in our community and being a channel for participation,
which we believe is the foundation for democracy; our goal
is to encourage involvement and voicing opinions. Our objective
is to work as a pioneer university chapter to establish ourselves
in the community and thereby inspire a broader proliferation
of SWA in the regional universities.
 |
In
pursuing these objectives we have already begun to sponsor
a series of events at Adelphi University, among which
was the successful kick-off campaign, held on Sept.
14, 2004, at which the Adelphi Chapter made its purpose
and vision known to the University. |
The event was attended by the University President, Dr. Robert
A. Scott, as well as the initial participants of the May conference,
and around 60 interested students.
| Continuing
in our commitment to making issues known and discussed,
the Adelphi Chapter has decided to adopt the current
Darfur Crisis in Sudan as our focal issue and has proposed
it as pressing global issue of the month. |
 |
Therefore we are planning a Symposium, on November 30th, discussing
the Darfur Crisis prospect of promoting global democracy in
the region. Also, in the consecutive 2004 Spring semester
we plan to hold a follow up Symposium of the Sudan situation,
which will include a Video conference with students in Africa.
