Hunger Dinner Benefit,
Cal Poly Chapter,
San Luis Obispo, CA, USA
|
The first event
held by the Cal Poly Chapter took place on November 16th,
2004. Over 50 people attended the Hunger Dinner Benefit.
This event proved to be an excellent case study of how the
chapters can function in terms of taking action, based on
the issues and resolutions discussed by the membership. The
membership selects an issue, deliberates it, votes on an
action(s) to address the issue, and finally (most
importantly) take the necessary steps to implement and
accomplish that action…that is, move beyond dialog.
Dr. Bud Evans’ POLS 333 Global Food Systems course discussed
the issue of Darfur during the month of October. They voted
on positions and actions the Student World Assembly should
take to address the issue. The top two positions selected
were:
1. To send funds to humanitarian relief groups working
in Darfur and Chad
2. To educate students in colleges and encourage them
to educate those in their communities about Darfur.
In response to the positions voted on by the students, the
Cal Poly Student World Assembly Chapter decided to hold a
Hunger Dinner Benefit. A Hunger Dinner is an interactive
event where the participants are representative of the
world’s population, and consequently are served the meal
which corresponds with their economic status. A very small
percentage are served a meal fit for the wealthy, that is a
full course meal, with wine, a dessert and first class
service. The upper middle class enjoys a self-served
hamburger meal with a soft drink. The lower middle class
eats rice, beans, a tortilla and water to drink. The poor
(the majority) are served only rice and water.
The Hunger Dinner Benefit raised $430.00USD which was
donated to Doctors without Borders (who are working
incessantly in the Darfur region) and the local Food Bank of
San Luis Obispo County
