NEW YORK, NY (February 21,2006) – On February
20th, 2006, SWA celebrated the signing of a Memorandum of
Agreement between the Governor of Nasarawa State of Nigeria, Dr.
Abdullahi Adamu, and the Student World Assembly organization
that outlines the commitment of the Nasarawa State Government.
During this trip, SWA wanted to assess the education level in
Nasarawa State in order to provide assistance to the country.
SWA is working collaboratively to provide more organizational
support and resources to the Nigerian members of the SWA. This
agreement was formed to show the need for a more pronounced
institutional presence within Nigeria to assist in the future
development and growth of the SWA in the region.
Dr. Abdullahi
Adamu provided valuable resources for SWA-Nigeria to maintain
and support its growing needs. These resources will enable
Nigerian SWA students to communicate more effectively with the
rest of the SWA membership and other student organizations, as
well as improve their technology skills thus allowing for an
enhanced global understanding. As part of this new
collaboration, the SWA plans to expand its support in Nigeria
through the formation of a Regional Planning Group (RPG). This
RPG will develop a set of programs and initiatives tailored to
the needs of Nigerian students and will implement them through
the creation of SWA Regional Centers that will assist students
in research on topics such as HIV/AIDS, entrepreneurship, and
other human rights.
In addition, in order to continue the fight
against HIV/AIDS, the SWA Centers will hold workshops and events
aimed at making relevant information available to the larger
student population by providing preventative materials and
educational leaflets for distribution. It is the goal of SWA to
replicate this model of SWA Regional Centers in Ghana and Kenya
and eventually throughout the world. By opening this chapter in
Nigeria, SWA is one step closer to achieving its goal.

Our Democratic Philosophy:
The Student World Assembly believes that true global democracy
affirms fundamental human rights, which include the dignity
and worth of all human beings, the equal rights of men and women,
social, economic, and cultural justice for every person, and
the freedom to promote these causes. SWA's representative democracy
offers a powerful instrument for addressing the vital social
and political conditions that threaten our global future. The
informed wishes of the people, conveyed through the collective
of a democratic assembly, need to be heard in the decision-making
processes. By giving students from the most remote to the more
accessible institutions an equal voice, we are enabling all
students to educate, participate, and take
action, and to begin thinking of themselves as global citizens.
