Peace Building and Conflict Resolution for Development

Release Date:
04.08.06

NEW YORK, NY (April 8, 2006) – On April 7th, 2006, The Student World Assembly (SWA)-Ghana and the Global Youth Action Network (GYAN)-Ghana, under the initiative of the “SAVE THE RURAL DWELLER” PROJECT, successfully held a workshop entitled “Peace Building and Conflict Resolution for Development” at the National Youth Council of Ghana. The main objective of the workshop was to empower participants on the need for peace and to educate them on how to resolve conflict in their personal lives, homes, churches, schools, communities, and nation of Ghana as a whole.

This workshop was facilitated by Greg Mitchell, a conflict resolution specialist at the University of Bradford, UK and Philip Jakeman, also from Bradford University, UK. The workshop theme was in line with the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), through youth voluntarism, in accordance with the idea that development only can take place in a peaceful environment. This was all emphasized through widespread education in order to sustain a peaceful environment and economy in the long run. The workshop was divided into three sections: Conflict Resolution: Theories of Conflict and Peace; Theories of Negotiation and Mediation; and Conflict Resolution and Development. During this workshop, Mr. Prize F Y McApreko (Director of Amnesty International – Ghana), Mr. Moses Kanduri (Vice Assembly Speaker of Student World Assembly), and Mr. Mensah Eteba (National Programme Co-coordinator, National Youth Council) also helped deliver messages of solidarity.

Our Democratic Philosophy:

The Student World Assembly believes that true global democracy affirms fundamental human rights, which include the dignity and worth of all human beings, the equal rights of men and women, social, economic, and cultural justice for every person, and the freedom to promote these causes. SWA's representative democracy offers a powerful instrument for addressing the vital social and political conditions that threaten our global future. The informed wishes of the people, conveyed through the collective of a democratic assembly, need to be heard in the decision-making processes. By giving students from the most remote to the more accessible institutions an equal voice, we are enabling all students to educate, participate, and take action, and to begin thinking of themselves as global citizens.
