Translates! |
The Student World Assembly would like to extend its warmest
thanks to Karen Kang Lucas for her tremendous efforts in
translating several pages of the website into Spanish for
those SWA members for whom Spanish is their first language.
Look for the link in the upper right hand side of the page.
SWA would also like to give other students the opportunity
to assist Karen in translating the website into Spanish
as it is a time consuming task. The more translators that
work on it, the more accessible the information becomes.
Feel free to peruse the website and let us know what you
think!

Corporate Power: Impact, Influence
and Accountability
With the ever expanding global dominance of corporations,
it is critical to ensure that their choices do not result
in a detrimental impact in the areas of human rights and
environment. The international community must make it clear
to the corporate world that they will be held accountable
for their policies and procedures, when they impinge on
the wellbeing of people or the planet.

Volunteer
Translators Needed
As our membership grows and people from around the world
access our website to explore our organization, the Student
World Assembly would like to make certain that the information
on the website is understandable to speakers of all languages.
So, at this time we are asking for volunteers to assist
in the translation of our website into as many languages
as possible. Even if you are able to translate only a small
portion of information on the website, it would be a tremendous
help to those who may not be as comfortable with the English
language as you. Help make Student World Assembly even more
globally accessible enabling even more people to discover
what SWA stands for. To be a part of this important initiative,
contact SWA at volunteer@studentworldassembly.com

Congratulations
SWA Graduates!
Student World Assembly would like to congratulate all the 2005
graduates on successfully completing their studies and would also
like to offer our best wishes as they launch into the careers
they have worked so hard to prepare for.
We would also like to remind those graduates that it is part of
SWA’s long term goal to maintain members’ participation
in our organization, even after graduation, thus allowing SWA
to grow into an elected World Assembly, representing individuals
globally much like the United Nations represents countries. “An
organization of this scope has the potential to become a focal
point for all agents of change (civil society, NGOs) and a forum
for all.” (Student World Assembly Manual)

International Convention
2005
It’s time again for the wonderful meeting of like-minded
individuals from around the world focused on implementing change
locally and globally: it’s the 2005 Annual International
Convention of the Student World Assembly! This year’s
convention will be held on October 6th – 9th at McGill
University in Montreal, Canada. SWA has arranged special pricing
for delegates and guests at the Best Western Ville-Marie Hotel
& Suites during these dates. Students who wish to attend
the 2005 International Convention, please be sure to obtain
a visa from the Canadian Embassy or Consulate in your country.
The annual Student World Assembly International Convention provides
a unique opportunity for SWA members, staff, and volunteers
to come together and examine different issues, ranging from
the central theme of the Convention to specific action plans
the SWA should adopt, over a period of a couple of days. It
also allows members from different parts of the world to meet
and interact in a friendly environment.
At the first SWA International Convention, held on July 18th
– 24th, 2004 at California Polytechnic State University
in San Louis Obispo, students were provided with an opportunity
to participate in an interactive democratic process. After listening
to expert testimony on war and environmental sustainability,
they were able to deliberate and discuss viable solutions. Not
only was it a time to discuss important global issues, it was
also an opportunity to network with other students from all
over the globe, with SWA’s founder, Paul Raynault, and
the SWA staff and volunteers. And there was still time for recreation,
from a game of soccer on the beach, to line dancing at a country
music club and a performance by the Russian National Orchestra!
The 2005 Annual International Convention is not far away so
it would be good to start preparing for it now. Beginning preparations
now will ensure that everyone is able to participate in the
convention, whether in person or through their chosen delegate.
This is going to be a very exciting event and SWA would like
to extend their best wishes to everyone who is planning on participating
in one way or another!

Our
Mission
The Student World Assembly is a
non-governmental, nonpartisan organization created to
represent students globally. It provides a deliberative assembly
where students around the world can exchange views, vote on
global issues through online discussion forums and in annual
international conventions, and translate these views into
meaningful actions. |
Our Democratic Philosophy
True representative
democracy offers a powerful instrument for addressing the
vital social and political conditions that threaten our
global future. The informed wishes of the people, conveyed
through the collective voice of a democratic assembly, need
to be heard in the decision- making processes. By giving
students from the most remote to the more accessible institutions
an equal voice, we are enabling all students to educate,
participate and take action, and to begin thinking of themselves
as global citizens.
