Pressing Global Issue |
Corporate Power: Impact, Influence & Accountability
With the ever expanding global dominance of corporations, it is critical to ensure that their choices do not result in a detrimental impact in the areas of human rights and environment. The international community must make it clear to the corporate world that they will be held accountable for their policies and procedures, when they impinge on the wellbeing of people or the planet.

Volunteer Opportunity |
Volunteer Translators Needed!
As our membership grows and people
from around the world access our website to learn
about our organization, the Student World Assembly
would like to make certain that the information
on the website is accessible to speakers of all
languages. So, at this time we are asking for volunteers
to assist in the translation of our website into
as many languages as possible. Even if you are able
to translate only a small portion of information
on the website, it would be a tremendous help to
those who may not be as comfortable with the English
language as you. Help make Student World Assembly
even more globally accessible enabling even more
people to discover what SWA stands for. To be a
part of this important initiative, contact SWA at:

SWA Members at University of Benin Host Educational Event on Violence Against Women
Nigeria - June 25th, 2005
On Saturday, June 25, almost 50 students gathered at the University of Benin to learn about violence against women. According to Amnesty International, up to two-thirds of women in certain communities in Lago State, Nigeria, are believed to have experienced physical, sexual or psychological violence in the family, with neither the Lagos government nor the Federal government doing anything to stem the tide of violence.
Along with students from the University of Benin, students from five other SWA chapters attended the event. The visiting chapters included the Universal College of Technology, the University of Ibadan, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the University of Ilorin, and Obafemi Awolowo University.
Ms. Amaka Akaeja, International, and Vice-President of the Anambra State league, delivered the key-note address, giving a dramatic insight into domestic violence. Akinbo A.A. Cornerstone, president of the Obafemi Awolowo University chapter, also gave a presentation on SWA. A discussion on the upcoming SWA International Convention, hosted this year at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, concluded the event.
The University of Benin, founded in 1970, is located in
Benin City, Nigeria. The school has over 36,000 students
in five academic programs - medicine and pharmacy, science,
engineering, education, arts, and social sciences. For more
information on the University of Benin, visit www.uniben.edu.

Our Mission The Student World Assembly is a non-governmental, nonpartisan organization created to represent students globally. It provides a deliberative assembly where students around the world can exchange views, vote on global issues through online discussion forums and in annual international conventions, and translate these views into meaningful actions. |
Our Democratic Philosophy The Student World Assembly believes that true global democracy affirms fundamental human rights, which include the dignity and worth of all human beings, the equal rights of men and women, social, economic and cultural justice for every person, and the freedom to promote these causes. SWA’s representative democracy offers a powerful instrument for addressing the vital social and political conditions that threaten our global future. The informed wishes of the people, conveyed through the collective of a democratic assembly, need to be heard in the decision-making processes. By giving students from the most remote to the more accessible institutions an equal voice, we are enabling all students to educate, participate and take action, and to begin thinking of themselves as global citizens.
