The
Student World Assembly collaborates with a number of related
organizations which espouse similar missions. The CivWorld
Citizens Campaign for Democracy, founded by The world-renown
political theorist of global civil society and democaracy,
Dr. Benjamin R. Barber,
is one of them. The CivWorld begins with the premise that
people--citizens of their own communities, their nations and
the world-can and must be the driving force and the principal
agents of change for a more democratic world. CivWorld's vision
is a world of democratic nations and a world of nations whose
relations are democratically governed.
A major initiative of the CivWorld is the annual celebration
of Interdependence Day when people from around the world are
invited to sign
The Declaration of Interdependence. The
Second Annual Interdependence Day will be held on September
12 in Rome, Italy. The event will bring together the Italian
Speaker of the House Pier Ferdinando Casini,
Governor Howard Dean, former President of
Slovenia Milan Kucan, Polish Solidarity leader,
Adam Michnik, former Mayor of Palermo Leoluca
Orlando, former French Prime Minister and European
Parliamentarian Michel Rocard, and many others.
Among the many civic leaders invited are also former President
of Switzerland Ruth Dreifuss, former President
Mikhail Gorbachev, and European Commission
President Romano Prodi. Bringing all these
people together with public, civic, and corporate leaders,
distinguished academics and diplomats, representatives from
American, Italian and international NGOs, and interested citizens
and students from around the world will serve to consolidate
efforts to create a new global culture of interdependence.
Along
with Rome there will be other Interdependence Day celebrations
taking place on campuses and in communities worldwide.
The SWA urgers its chapters and members to join in this
celebration by signing The
Declaration of Interdependence and by publicizing
the event to others on their campuses. Please also visit
the World
Citizen Foundation.
