SWA Advocacy Internship Information

The Advocacy Team works to ensure that the organization sustains its ongoing expansion and development.  A candidate must be an undergraduate student; a graduate student; or have graduated from college within twelve months at the beginning of the internship. Interns are expected to work between 15-20 hours a week. Internships are offered during the Summer, Fall, and Winter/Spring semesters. Interns may receive academic credit if an agreement is made between the SWA and the intern's college or university.  The roles and responsibilities of Advocacy members are diverse and fall into the following categories:

  • Internship Program Recruitment
  • Member Outreach & Chapter Establishment
  • Advocates Support & Chapter Development
  • Discussion Forum Moderators
  • SWA Advocates*
*SWA Advocates (Out-of-Office):

The primary responsibilities of a SWA Advocate are to establish a successful student chapter at their home university and increase SWA’s public exposure in their community and country. While not based in our New York Headquarters, SWA Advocates play a vital part in expanding the global reach of the organization. This internship opportunity can be conducted anywhere in the world…wherever you are! SWA Advocates will work directly with the Advocacy Team Coordinator and other staff based in New York via weekly e-mail updates. Eligible candidates must currently be enrolled at a secondary or post-secondary educational institution. Interns are expected to work approximately 10 hours a week. Internships are offered during the Summer, Fall, and Winter/Spring semesters. Internships are unpaid but maybe done for academic credit or on a volunteer basis. Interns may receive academic credit if an agreement is made between the SWA and the intern's college or university. Interns have three to six months to complete their duties.

Required Skills:

Knowledge of MS Office products, internet navigation; ability to organize administrative projects; demonstrate clear and effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to meet deadlines and maintain a flexible schedule; strong diplomatic skills in dealing with people from a variety of cultures and backgrounds; awareness of and sensitivity to a variety of cultural perspectives; awareness of prominent global issues; ability to represent SWA in a professional and positive manner.
